Old furniture in Helsinki: 7 ways to get rid of it

Every piece of furniture that stays behind is one less thing to carry. Here are seven routes for old furniture in the Helsinki area, with prices checked in October 2026.

Sell or donate furniture in good condition, take broken pieces to a Sortti station. In the Helsinki area the reuse centre Kierrätyskeskus collects good-condition furniture from your home as a paid service: €24.90 from the front door of the building or €39.90 from inside the flat (October 2026). At HSY's Sortti stations mixed waste costs households €20/m³, and electronics, metal and cardboard are accepted free of charge. If you have no time or no car, everything can go in one trip: our waste removal costs from €90 plus Sortti fees at cost.

Seven options

01Sell on Tori.fi or Facebook

Sought-after furniture, such as design chairs, good sofas, chests of drawers and storage units, sells when the ad goes up in time. Start three to four weeks before the move, take photos in daylight and give the measurements. Price it so it actually goes: in moving week every unsold cupboard has to be carried. Agree that the buyer collects and brings their own help.

02Give it to neighbours or friends

Your building's Facebook group or the notice board in the stairwell is the fastest way to find a new home for an ordinary shelf or table. It's free and takes one trip down the stairs.

03Kierrätyskeskus

The Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre (Kierrätyskeskus) accepts furniture in good condition that is suitable for reuse. You can take it to one of their shops or book a pickup: €24.90 from the front door or €39.90 from inside the flat. Pickups run on weekdays in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen, plus some postcodes in the surrounding municipalities. Broken items are not accepted. Current terms are on the Kierrätyskeskus website.

04Charity second-hand shops

Fida, the Finnish Red Cross Kontti shops and many other charity second-hand shops accept good-condition furniture in their stores. Practices vary from shop to shop, so call before you set off with the sofa. Some also arrange a pickup.

05When you buy something new

When you buy a new household appliance, the seller is obliged to accept your old equivalent one. A shop may charge for taking it away as part of home delivery. If we collect a new piece of furniture for you, the old one can leave on the same trip: see furniture delivery and pickups.

06Sortti station

Broken and worn-out furniture belongs at an HSY Sortti station. Mixed waste costs households €20/m³, and an old sofa typically takes 1–2 cubic metres. Electronics, metal, cardboard and household hazardous waste are accepted free of charge. You'll need a car or a trailer, and the load is sorted by waste type at the station. Current prices and opening hours are on the HSY website.

07Waste removal through us

When there's a lot or you have no car, we carry, load, sort and drive the load to a Sortti station for you. Transport costs from €90 depending on the amount, and HSY's reception fees are charged at cost with no markup. For example, an old sofa and a couple of bags of mixed waste come to about 2 m³, roughly €130 in total. Items still in good condition can go to a reuse centre instead.

Don't leave it by the bins

Furniture doesn't belong in your building's waste shelter or next to the bins. The rubbish truck won't take it, and the removal bill usually ends up with the housing company and so with all residents.

Timeline: declutter before you pack

Decluttering before packing saves twice. You need fewer boxes, and on moving day every cupboard left behind shortens the work you pay for by the hour. Count your moving boxes after decluttering.
